Scott Mills. Tilly Pearce. In this article:. Beccy was initially diagnosed with transverse myelitis, an inflammation of the nerves around the spinal cord, which can often be a sign of MS but doctors were unable to give her a solid diagnosis.
The steroids doctors gave her helped but Becky says she often couldn't walk or would lose the energy to even lift a pen. But after waking one morning to find half her face was drooping, Beccy made an urgent appointment to see her neurologist. Beccy, who still works at Radio 1 but in a more relaxed behind-the-scenes role, is currently coping without medication such as injections of beta interferon and glatiramer acetate, which can help to prevent relapses.
But she hopes eating well, getting lots of sleep and doing yoga will keep tiredness and stress - which both exacerbate the symptoms - at bay. Between 10 and 15 per cent of sufferers have the primary progressive form PPMS which is characterised by a slow but relentless loss of mobility. However, most MS sufferers are aged between 20 and 40 at the time of diagnosis. Beccy's RRMS is the most common form, where symptoms flare up and then fade away. Her on-air partner and close friend Scott Mills is familiar with the condition because his mother Sandra has had the progressive form of the disease for six years.
Now she and Michael are planning to start a family. Before her MS, she would be happy to laze around on the weekends watching TV, Beccy says now that when her symptoms abate she makes the most of it. For more information and support, visit the Multiple Sclerosis Society at mssociety.
