However, AAdvantage Gold and Platinum elites will have to use mile upgrade certificates to request an upgrade. I personally make a habit out of requesting to use my mile upgrades every time I fly with American. You can also select two additional SWUs as a milestone benefit upon reaching ,, , and , Elite Qualifying Miles in a year.
AAdvantage Million Milers will also get two additional SWUs upon reaching 2 million lifetime miles and again at each million thereafter. One of my favorite hidden gems when it comes to American Airlines is the Business Extra program.
This second loyalty program lets small businesses double dip and earn a second type of loyalty currency in addition to AAdvantage miles for a flight. Business Extra offers a variety of redemption options including free flights, Admirals Club passes and even AAdvantage Gold status, but one of the best values comes in using these points for an upgrade certificate.
The international upgrade certificates can represent a great value as well, and you can choose between upgrading a full-fare ticket or a discounted ticket. The cheaper, full-fare upgrade is valid only on tickets beginning with fare code J or Y, while the discounted upgrade certificate has the same restriction noted above not applicable for B, N, O, Q or S tickets. They are often insanely expensive, and the description on their web site doesn't tell me very much. What you are really buying is a discounted first class fare that's why they are so expensive. But because the fare class is a coach class, companies allow it when the company policy is coach only. So buy a high priced coach ticket, sit in first class.
Only good for domestic flights. And sometimes the "instant upgrade" fares are only a few dollars more than the cheapest available IF you are booking late and the plane is mostly sold out. Personally I think the Instant Upgrade terminology is slightly confusing as to all intents and purposes they are confirmed first class seats; you get assigned a seat in first, you earn frequent flyer miles for that cabin etc. I use them for pretty much all my travels on AA and love them.
Reading this, allow me to put words in Greatam's keyboard to clarify for those thinking they can get a "cheap" upgrade Not that they are only a bit more than the lowest fares in the market. Just when those cheaper buckets are already sold out. By LauraS Started October 12, Cruise Air. October 19, Log In Issues. What is AA "Instant Upgrade" price? Recommended Posts.
