A drug dealer smokes. Parents need to know that Snitch is an action thriller that doesn't sugarcoat the violence inherent in the drug trade. There are plenty of bloody gunfights and shootings, some at close range, and other brutal clashes, too a man is shown strangling another, etc. Cars chase and drive into each other on freeways, crashing and exploding and claiming lives. There are also allusions to prisoners beating up others to exert their dominance. When his son Jason Rafi Gavron , a high school senior, is arrested in a major narcotics bust, construction executive John Matthews Dwayne Johnson is introduced to the brutal world of mandatory sentencing laws.
Though Jason is just a naive player in this world, the feds, led by the prosecutor Susan Sarandon , expect him to SNITCH, to give up someone up the chain as part of a plea deal. But Jason won't talk on principle -- and he doesn't know anyone else besides the one friend who snitched on him to begin with, anyway. So instead, Matthews decides to offer himself up as a bargaining chip to limit Jason's sentence.
He'll go undercover and become the bait to lure the proverbial bigger fish, a drug dealer Michael K. Williams who's running the local trade. This moie has an uphill struggle from the get-go. Though its subject matter reeks of gravitas, it doesn't have the chops of a rich, complicated film like Traffic despite a cast that includes the underused Sarandon and the top-rate Bratt , nor does it have the taut pacing of the Bourne movies.
But for an action thriller with a message that drug-sentencing laws for first-time offenders are massively unfair , Snitch moves at a good clip and lets the plot, based on a true story, unspool in a straightforward, if pedestrian, manner.
So, yes, it's entertaining. Johnson doesn't exhibit much range, but it suffices. He's convincing as a father focused on getting the job done -- negotiating his son's release from jail -- no matter the cost.
The back story has just enough layering that we care a bit for the characters, and maybe even the social issues the film tries to illuminate. Snitch is no trailblazer, though not every movie has to be. It's really more of a two-and-a-half-star film than a three, but we'll give it the extra half star, anyway, for the eye-opening, fast-moving story. Families can talk about Snitch 's messages. Since his friend informed on him, Jason is now facing a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years, being unable to cut a deal to inform on any drug dealers.
However, his father John Dwayne Johnson is willing to go for bat for him. In fact, he will go so far as to go undercover to get dirt on big time drug kingpins, which almost gives ambitious federal prosecutor Joanne Keeghan Susan Sarandon a spontaneous orgasm. So, it's a good thing that John has ex-cons working for him like Daniel Jon Bernthal. And it helps that Susan Sarandon gives another very fine performance, even against a miscast Dwayne Johnson who while a decent enough actor is not quite adept at the whole vulnerability thing.
Still, that is long before the movie betrays itself, turning from a family drama into an action flick. Admittedly, some people require car chases and shootouts to get the message across, so it's not a total loss.
Walter M Super Reviewer. Mar 08, An enjoyable if very flawed vehicle concerning an everyday man Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson and how his son Rafi Gavron is arrested after being set-up by his best friend in a drug sting, even though he had no intent to sell or obtain as much as he did by accident.
After he is sentenced to the law's minimum requirement, ten years in prison, his father decides to cut a deal with the federal government and try to capture a big fish in the cartel drug market, which would dramatically reduce his son's sentence. Although it has some big, big problems, mostly the believability of this kind of situation, this movie is clearly made to be entertaining, and for that it largely succeeds.
It does try to take a tough stance on the drug war in our country, but sadly this is not the kind of movie in which this serious perspective makes a lot of sense to make any sort of impact. The story and characters are pretty disjointed though, and full of some serious plot holes. I won't spoil anything, but when you're actively trying to contemplate these plot holes instead of paying full attention to the movie, you know there's something wrong.

Now, listen, this movie is decent. I don't think it paints that good a picture of what drugs are and this movie wouldn't happen because most drug gangs wouldn't reveal their location or anything to a newcomer, they'd be more careful.
